One statement piece...three scenarios: Formal

"Special occasion formal" rather than "black tie formal."

And finally, after covering work and weekends: how to wear the statement piece to an evening of dinner, drinks, and nosebleed seats at the Royal Opera House.

1. The statement piece: wool and silk paisley-print skirt, Sea NY.

2. Black blouse with sweetheart neckline, Jaeger.

3. Elsa Peretti "Diamonds by the Yard" drop earrings in sterling silver, Tiffany. A necklace would be overkill with the top’s fussy neckline, and these earrings are simple but elegant.

4. Cream silk / cashmere pashmina, Kashmere and me.

5. Black wool coat, L.K.Bennett. The length means it's impractical as an everyday coat for me (mudstains, getting caught in doors or escalator steps), but I like having a "nicer" coat so that I don't have to pair ballgowns with parkas.

6. 20-den nude tights in "Crystal," Falke.

7. Black patent courts, L.K.Bennett (here is a less expensive alternative).

8. Black satin opera gloves, Roeckl – they're a bit old-fashioned but look cute in a vintage way with a short-sleeved t-shirt like the one pictured (and they're surprisingly insulating).

9. Black clutch, Coast.

10. Crystal hair pins, Glitzy Secrets (which sells accessories, not lapdances).
